A high-tech farming process will create a unique and safe egg

Greeting us with sparkling eyes of joy and indescribable excitement, Mrs. Lam Thuy Ai - General Director of Mebi Farm JSC eagerly “boasted”: “Mebi Farm now has eggs to serve consumers”..

Knowing that Mrs. Lam Thuy Ai had been harboring the desire to build a high-tech circular farming system for more than 5 years, one can understand that this is not just simple joy, but also a proud realization of a big dream.

Chatting with Mrs. Lam Thuy Ai

Last month, when discussing the issue of unsafe and untraceable food - a matter causing public concern, Mrs. Ai confided:

As the economy grows, people's awareness becomes higher. Producers now not only need to create delicious products but also 'healthy' ones, meaning both ensuring safety and optimizing nutritional value for health. Recognizing this clearly, from nearly ten years ago, I dreamed of a product line that is truly clean and healthy.

Specifically for eggs, this is a favorite dish that my husband and children can eat every day. However, concerned about warnings that eating too many eggs is bad for the liver and causes yellowing of the skin, I often 'grumbled' to stop them.

When I couldn't convince my family, I started asking myself: 'Why are eggs considered a basic, highly nutritious food in other countries that can be eaten daily? Why does a Westerner consume hundreds of eggs a year, while a Vietnamese only consumes a few dozen?'.

The journey to conquer the dream

Moreover, the concept of clean and safe eggs actually goes much deeper than the simple notion that organic backyard eggs are guaranteed to be safe.

To answer those questions, in 2016, I went on a journey through the US and European countries such as Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, France, Germany, Denmark, along with Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore... The trip helped me understand why they consume so many eggs and how they do agriculture to create eggs that are both highly nutritious and absolutely safe.”

What did you learn and how did you implement it from those trips?

Although I visited many places, not every model impressed me. In Italy, they dry chicken manure, compress it, and export it to developing countries as fertilizer, but this method didn't convince me. In the Netherlands, I approached a very modern circular agricultural model, but the flock size was too small, so it wasn't really suitable to learn from.

It was not until I set foot in Japan that I was truly amazed by a 2-million-hen farm located right in the heart of the city. They run a closed process with strict disease control. Chicken manure is thoroughly processed to fertilize clean rice and vegetables, and then all rice, vegetables, eggs, and egg products are distributed directly through their own store chain. Witnessing them milling rice and baking right at the farm, I exclaimed: “Wow! This is exactly the model I've been searching for!”

Did all plans go smoothly after that, ma'am?

Returning to the country, I was determined to build a circular farming process according to Japanese standards: green design, meeting ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) standards, operated with smart and closed management technology. I want to turn Mebi Farm into a model for safe, traceable egg farming, where animals enjoy welfare and live happily in a sustainable ecosystem.

Of course, the challenge is not small. Operating a high-tech farm requires systematic investment from the roots, deep knowledge of farming, food, and above all, persistence and the courage to pioneer against risks.

The first step was finding land. I was lucky to purchase a 72-hectare land in Binh Thuan quite quickly, but the legal procedures were a difficult puzzle. If it was under a personal name, it would be quick, but because I wanted to build it under a professional Japanese corporate farming model, I had to persistently pursue it for 3 long years to complete the establishment procedures for Mebi Farm JSC and obtain project approval.

Next were construction procedures. Although much more difficult than a family-scale project, my persistence and dedication convinced local authorities.

Directly introducing the products to customers

They dedicatedly guided me to complete the legal process, even approving a 1/500 zoning equivalent to an industrial park. Thanks to that, Mebi Farm currently has full functional subdivisions of an international-standard farm.

You just mentioned “welfare and happy living” for animals - a concept that sounds quite new in Vietnam's animal husbandry, doesn't it?

Actually, this is not a new concept and has been applied by developed countries for a long time. At Mebi Farm, we established our own complete feed mill to absolutely control input quality, thereby ensuring the highest nutrient content for each egg.

On an area of 70 hectares, our farm system nurtures 1.2 million laying hens and 400,000 pullets. The entire infrastructure from housing, packaging systems to waste treatment is invested systematically and synchronized with equipment from leading global corporations such as Hytem, Nabel (Japan), Big Herdsman (China) and operated entirely by AI technology.

The flock here lives in a clean, cool environment and enjoys high-class nutrition : fresh feed produced daily, corn, soybean, rice bran, carrots, marigolds, sunflowers, and drinks UF-filtered mineral-retained water. Thanks to this amino-acid-rich diet, the egg yolk not only has a beautiful golden color but is also delicious with consistent quality.

In particular, each house has its own nutritional formula to create specialized product lines: Omega eggs, DHA eggs, herbal eggs, or eggs specifically for gym-goers, diabetics... All eggs go through an automatic scanning system for quality control. We absolutely commit not to use animal protein such as bone meal, fish meal, or meat meal in farming.

Consumers today often care less about the process and mainly compare prices. With high prices, are you worried about the output for the product?

That is indeed the biggest challenge for clean food producers. Currently, Mebi Farm eggs are priced at about 7,000 VND/egg, nearly double the market rate. Many advised me to lower the price for easier sales, but I refused because quality cannot be equated through price.

Without fully understanding the strict process to create a delicious, nutritious, and safe product, consumers usually prioritize cheap prices. But I believe that once they understand the nutritional value and the huge cost to “grow” a truly clean egg, customers will change their choices. It is contradictory that a crate of beer costing over 200 thousand VND is bought willingly despite not being good for health, while a dozen nutritious eggs costing 70 thousand VND makes many hesitate. A smart consumer will definitely know where the worthy investment lies.

If you could summarize the outstanding advantages and the biggest differences of Mebi Farm eggs compared to other clean eggs today, what would you say?

The most outstanding advantage is absolute safety: customers can crack a raw egg directly over rice to eat without cooking, and still feel completely safe. If soft-cooked, you will feel the characteristic rich aroma, completely different from normal eggs.

Finally, it is transparency. Having clear traceability and quality control helps consumers control their meals, knowing exactly what they are putting into their bodies to adjust their diets scientifically.

Hearing the good news that Mebi Farm eggs have export orders, but word has it that you still want to prioritize domestic consumers, why is that?

It is true that currently, I have two export orders to Singapore, but my wish is that the best eggs we produce must be reserved for Vietnamese, for domestic consumers first before thinking about exporting.

I became aware of this mindset when I started my veterinary medicine business. When making a good product, even though I have export orders, I always think that the best eggs must be for Vietnamese consumers first , we must distribute and sell to domestic users first. There is no reason why the product we make best, with the most dedication and safety, should be exported while domestic people cannot consume it and have to buy imported products.

This mindset comes from a story about my husband. When he was young, whenever there was the best fruit in the garden, my mother-in-law would save it to sell.

Biết vậy, ông xã tôi luôn “lén” lấy trái ngon ăn trước. Mẹ chồng hỏi tại sao, chồng tôi nói: “We worked so hard to grow good fruit, why don't you let the family eat them but make us eat the bad ones?”.

This is similar to the Japanese, who also believe that whatever is best and most delicious should be prioritized for domestic consumers instead of being exported.

While the Vietnamese mindset is often to export the best goods, that's why I always choose the best things to give to my family, staff, and domestic users first.

Like clean vegetables in the farm, many asked why I don't sell them but give them to the staff to eat. I said: “Young people today often buy imported goods believing they are better.” When asked why they like imported food, the staff said: “We buy it because we think it is safe, high quality, and hygienic.”

Therefore, I want my staff to be the first consumers, so that they can experience and understand what a delicious, clean, and healthy product is like. From experiencing and feeling safe, they will see the value of the products the company makes and will work with dedication. This is also how I want to change the mindset of the younger generation to “get used to buying domestic and feeling safe with domestic products” because they are the smart young consumers of the future.

What message do you want to send to consumers through your dedicated product?

Currently, very few people build and run the Mebi Farm model because it costs a lot and takes a long time to recover capital, along with many risks. Using a prime 72-hectare land in Binh Thuận for agriculture is something no one would do, because doing resort tourism would yield quick, safe profits with much fewer risks. But my dream is to produce clean food for the people and more importantly, I want our business to bring pride to my children.

I want my children and the young successors in the company to feel proud of the meaningful value we bring. Therefore, besides operating legally, Mebi Farm also strictly meets environmental protection standards, ESG, renewable energy, and follows circular economy processes...

Currently, the young staff in the company are very happy and love their work. They get to work, see with their own eyes how the chickens lay eggs and how the system operates, and I hope this project runs smoothly as planned to affirm to everyone: Farming, especially agricultural products, must definitely be done this way.

Just like my slogan: “Real farm, real foods - Only real farms produce real foods” and when we have dedicatedly invested to make a responsible egg, we also hope consumers will empathize and understand the value we bring. Understanding that behind each real and healthy egg is a very difficult, dedicated journey that we must persistently overcome and refine every day.

Honestly, do you feel exhausted venturing into agriculture - a field where everyone says is “very hard”?

Farming is very hard, but if we find the model and value to bring to the community, I feel very happy and life is very fulfilling and meaningful. In the future, I also hope to develop the farm into a tourist attraction.

There, visitors can tour the farm, walk around the clean fruit and vegetable gardens under the closed loop system, watch the chickens lay eggs, make cakes and dishes from clean eggs and vegetables, and enjoy the products on-site. Through this, visitors not only experience but also understand more about the farm agricultural model, and the value of products made and brought to the community.

Thank you, and wish the project continued growth and replication!
